This was a fun shot that produced bright bold colors. The set up of this shot enhanced it’s appeal (I hope).
I’ve included a shot of exactly how this was taken:
). Utilize a number of colored pencils all having the same length and sharpened to the same points.
). Tape them to a piece of wood so they are aligned side by side.
). Find a suitable glass jar. NOTE: I did not have a glass jar. All I had was this rather thick plastic jar. The thick plastic works against image sharpness. Try to use glass to obtain the sharpest detail you can.
). Insert the pencil assembly the jar.
). Continuous LED lighting was used to the left and right of the pencils which gave it an equally distributed illumination.
). White cardboard for backdrop.
). Set assembly on backdrop and fool with your lighting to get it perfect.
). Place camera on a tripod and achieve proper exposure and focus.
). Use a cable release, remote IR release.
). With shutter release in hand pour your bubbling seltzer water into the container. As soon as you achieve the proper height of the seltzer water begin shooting.
). Take multiple shots then review. In my case the bubbles sometimes landed in bad positions and ruined the shot so I would take a wooden ruler and reach into redistribute the bubbles. If I had to add more water I would.
). If you’re using a camera release you may want to set the camera to take multiple exposures with the one release of the shutter (if your camera allows for this).
). Post process to enhance color and increase sharpness.
