My Grandfather served in WW II (1939 to 1945). He served approx. (4) years the dates of which I’m not exactly sure. He was in the Army’s infantry unit and resigned as a sergeant (E5).
I don’t have all his ribbons or medals but am fortunate enough to become the safe keeper of the (3) shown in the photo:
BRONZE STAR – The Bronze Star, is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone
PURPLE HEART – Awarded to those wounded during combat.
GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL – This is one of the military’s oldest awards. It is awarded for three consecutive years of honorable and faithful service without any disciplinary action or infractions during that time frame. During war time the medal can be awarded for one year of faithful service.
Grandpa never talked about the war, never. I know nothing of his service except that he was shot and survived. He was a rugged guy and if I had to bet he returned the favor.
These medals were passed onto me by my Mother, (his daughter), for safe keeping. I have deep respect for those that fought, (& still do), for the freedoms we enjoy in this country. The sacrifices they make during war time cannot be fully appreciated unless we walk in their shoes. It is with sincerity I say “thanks”.
Grandpa died in 1971 when I was a freshman in high school. We enjoyed sports together and he would often drive us up from central CT to Springfield MA to see the Springfield Kings professional hockey team play. He passed at the young age of 53. I do miss him.
