[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]Who doesn’t enjoy the site of well kept tugboat? I’ve always thought they were just, plain old, cool. So when I was photographing along the Providence River Park I spotted these two boats docked adjacent to their facility.
If you need a tow or perhaps a little help bring your ship into harbor then McAllister towing would be the folks to call. They are a big time operation with facilities and tugs up and down the east coast.
If you go to their website take a gander at their company newsletters. Fascinating stuff. It will give you a real insight into the depth of their duties. In addition there is a lot of interesting history and trivia. You’d also see the financial burdens they face to keep up with Government EPA regulations and the like.
My Great-grandfather was a tug boat operator back in the early 1900’s. I have no idea what their paid today but I do know that back then this was a very prestigious position which allowed a tug Captain to live a high quality life with all the trimmings. I never had the pleasure of meeting my Grandfather. I did, however, have the very good fortune of having my Great-grandmother in my life until I was 36 years old. She lived to be 96.
As I took these photo’s I was so tempted to enter their yard and start asking some questions but better judgment stopped me. After all who am I? The pull was strong however. Like most guys I can dig a powerful machine (stated in it’s purest form). On a deeper note I would have loved to have seen the insides of a tug to get a sense of how my Grand-father lived his life.
