The Stillwater Mill was the largest of the mills in town and at it’s peak employed approx. 600 people. Folks even kept their jobs throughout the great depression as manufacturing continued. The owner would put the production into inventory for sale at a later time. This mill also provided the material for military uniforms during WWII.
In 1963 Harrisivlle and it’s community were dealt a blow. The mill was down to about 250 people and with decreasing profits the operation was moved to North Carolina. In essence this began the severe and rapid decline of textile manufacturing in the area.
