As part of my on going efforts to document the decline of the industrial revolution in this area I have photographed what was once the Ames Manufacturing Company located in Chicopee, MA. Best I could figure there were three rather lengthy and substantial building on comprising their complex. All of which were adjacent to the canal running on the grounds which was used for hydro power beginning back in 1847 when the mill was built.
The company was founded in 1791 in Chelmsford, MA by John Ames. The company continued to grow as Nathan Peabody Ames, (John’s son), advanced the business until his death in 1847. At the same time the buildings in this entry were built. This mill manufactured numerous military swords, canons, canon balls and armaments. In addition they contributed much in the way of bronze castings. I do not know when Ames closed their doors for good.
Most of your photos are of Cabotville which was not part of Ames. Cabotville was a cotton mill. Most of the buildings date from the early 1900s. I had my business in Cabotville for more than 20 years till I moved up the street to one of the oldest Ames buildings.
Hi Dave – Thank you for your comments. When researching the history of these buildings I found that the information was not particularly clear. As a result I was forced to make the best interpretation I could. You know the area far better than me so I do appreciate your clarification.
