Beautiful Heritage Farm Barn with it’s majestic silo sits hi atop the hillside in scenic Bolton CT.  I was quite a considerable distance away for this shot as they owned a lot of acreage around the barn and I’m limited to shooting from the roadside.

I called on my Nikon 80-400 mm lens to get the reach I needed.  Remember one of the advantages of a cropped sensor, (compared to full frame sensor’s), is that you get the advantage of a multiplier.  This Nikon camera extends every lens by a multiplier of 1.5.  So basically instead of 400 mm I had a reach of 600 mm.  This allowed me to come in fairly close and retain detail in the barn.

TIP:  When using a long lens such as this it’s very difficult to hand hold it due to it’s weight and length. A good rule of thumb to follow is to set your shutter speed the same as the longest reach on the lens or greater (in this case you don’t count the multiplier effect).  For example with a max of 400 mm reach then your shutter speed should be at least 1/400th.  Even though I had the lens cradled in the open car window I still jacked up the shutter speed to 1/1000th to ensure a nice sharp image.  As a result of doing this I had to had to increase the ISO to 1600 to compensate for the fast shutter.  This camera still renders good quality at ISO 1600.
