The Gold Star Memorial Bridge comprises a pair of bridges that carry northbound and southbound traffic on Interstate 95 over the Thames River.  These bridges connect New London and Groton, CT.  The first bridge was built in 1943 and second bridge was built 30 years later as traffic flow warranted.  This is the largest bridge in the State of Connecticut.

Groton, CT is well know as the home of General Dynamics – Electric Boat Division.  Many nuclear  subs have been and continue to be built at this location.

New London has a rich history as a seafaring and whaling town dating back to early America.  Today New London is probably best known for the home of the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Running parallel to the Gold Star Memorial Bridge is a four span Steel Truss Bridge that is still in use today primarily by Amtrak passenger trains. I believe the bridge is simply referred to as the Thames River Bridge.
