Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull spearheaded efforts to build Fort Trumbull in New London where the Thames River meets the Long Island Sound om 1775. The fort was completed in 1977. The fort was captured by the British during the Revolutionary War in 1781 under the  command of Benedict Arnold.

Fort Trumbull went on to serve as an organization center for Union troops during the Civil War.  It was here that troops were recruited and trained prior to leaving for war.

From 1939 to 1946 most of the Merchant Marine officers, who served during War War II were trained here.  Merchant Marines were critical to the success of World War II as they transported personnel, supplies, and equipment.  1 in 26 Merchant Marines were killed during their tour of duty marking this as the single most hazardous duty of all the services during that time.  For more information on the role of Merchant Marines go here.

After the war Fort Trumbull offered college course via the University of Connecticut from 1946 to 1950 exclusively for War Veterans.

The U.S. Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory, whose role was to develop sonar systems for U.S. Navy subs, occupied the Fort from 1950 to 1990.

In the year 2000 the Fort was opened as a State park and tourist attraction.  For an excellent aerial view of the Fort go here.

USCGC Eagle

The “tall ship” serves as a training vessel for cadets and officers.  It has taken numerous voyages across the sea’s and competed in sailing races as well.  For more about this ship go here.

If you enjoy day trips I wouldn’t hesitate to spend it here. The Fort is located in a terrific location by the sea and, frankly, it’s just plain enjoyable walking around the grounds with the beautiful surroundings.  In addition there is rich history here not to mention all that the City of New London offers a tourist as well. Because my visit was in the winter I was not able to visit the interior.  I will be back in the summer to photograph and document that as well.
