Downtown Portland Maine
Cheryl and I stayed a few days at the Westin Hotel in downtown Portland ME during mid September of 2018. We spent a lot of time in South Portland and surrounding towns as we preferred that to the city scene. This shot was taken from Bug Light Park. That’s the home of the Bug Light Lighthouse (see Bug Light Lighthouse post). The park was very serene with the Atlantic ocean on the north and east side. It also presented a beautiful view of downtown Portland. This is a vibrant city of around 68,000 and Maines most populated.
The shot was taken about 15′ above the old abandoned docks as the park was elevated from sea level and fenced in. Otherwise I, most likely, would have gotten down on ground level closer to the docks.
Not shown in the picture, but off to the left, was a large port with hundreds of vessels which are craned off onto dry land. This is obviously a very active seaport with incoming cargo from points unknown to me. If you look closely at the Portland side of the harbor you’ll see two red tugboats.

Photography Tip
If you frame up this image from Bug Light Park the city will be very flat and small off in the horizon. The trick was to zoom in on the city, focus and take the shot. Then take a wide angle shot of the docks. Merge the two images in photoshop (or similar software). That way the city pops in the background and you can see all the detail.
