Located in the Grosvernordale (pop 1500) section of Thompson (pop 5000) CT sits this abandoned cotton mill which is a reminder of day’s gone by.
This mill was home to the Grosvernodale Cotton Mill which closed it’s doors in 1954. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to gather much further information about this company.
This part of CT is best known for The Thompson Motor Speedway which is located not far from here. I was on my way to a sales call when I stumbled upon this gem. Because I got to my call an hour early I had the entire lunch hour to walk around this building and take pictures. For an old shutterbug like myself I was in bliss.
You’ll note some cars in one of the photographs. Obviously someone is renting out some floor space. This probably would have been converted to a condo by now but, frankly, I’m not sure there are a whole lot of jobs around this neck of the woods.
Photographed with Fujifilm Finepix F100fd, 12 MP, pocket camera.
Excellent pictures, if these former Mills, don’t find another use, they are the subject to vandalism and fires, as we have now seen, by the fire at the Conant Thread Works which lost 8 historic Mills.
Hi Richard,
Thank you for your comments. I agree, it’s sad. Always nice when they are re-purposed. Would have been nicer if they all stayed working mills but, unfortunately, those days are long gone.
