This post is part of a continuing series called “one room schoolhouses”. To view other one room schoolhouses in CT and RI access the search menu in the top right corner of the homepage and enter “schoolhouse”.

The Southwest District School at 430 Simsbury Rd., in Bloomfield, CT, is a historic one-room schoolhouse built in 1858.  Constructed from locally quarried stone, it replaced an earlier wooden structure that had burned down.  The school remained in operation until 1923, serving the rural agricultural families of the area.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 and is currently owned by the Wintonbury Historical Society.  Due to its close promimity to a busy state highway, it is not regularly open to the visitors, but special viewings can be arranged. 1
