Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse
2 Fort Rd, South Portland, ME 04106

Cheryl and I decided to spent a few days up in the Portland ME area this past September to photograph some lighthouses and take in the sights.

Spring Point Ledge lighthouse is a beauty.  We caught a nice day for photography and there were few people there which allowed me to get the images I wanted.  If you’re into lighthouses this is one to see.

Photographed with a Nikon D7100 and Nikon 80-400 mm telephoto lens, tripod mounted.  1/1250, F16, ISO 800

PHOTO TIPS:

F 16 was used to get as much depth of field as possible without degrading the image too much by going to F22 or F32.  The camera’s sweet spot is F8 (sharpest image). So as you go away from F8 your sharpness declines.

I used a telephoto lens to “compress” the image as this lighthouse was a considerable distance from the camera.  This brought the lighthouse up close  in the image making it more eye appealing.

F16 aperture was not the hyperfocal setting to allow me to get everything from front to back in focus. So two shots were taken.  One shot focusing on the flowers in front and the second focusing on the lighthouse.  I then merged both shots in photoshop and everything was then in focus throughout the image.

A fast shutter speed such as F1250 froze any action from the walkers and fisherman.
