The Consolidated Cigar Company in Glastonbury, CT
*I, along with my wife Cheryl and our dog Molly, photographed what remains of the Consolidated Cigar Company and tobacco fields on Hubbard St. in Glastonbury CT. Below is a brief summary of it’s history and future.
The Consolidated Cigar Company was established int he early 1900s in Glastonbury, CT. It quickly grew to become of the towns largest employers and taxpayers. At its peak, the company owned up to 1900 acres of tobacco fields in town. The company’s main facility was a large warehouse on Hubbard St., which was used to store and pack tobacco.
However, as the demand for shade-grown tobacco declined in the 1980s, the company’s operations dwindled, and it eventually left Glastonbury. The warehouse on Hubbard St. once a bustling hub of activity, has since been repurposed for various potential uses.
The future of the former warehouse is currently focused on redevelopment. A Wallingford based developer, JS Advisors LLC, has proposed converting the warehouse into a 31 unit condominium complex known as “Warehouse 38”. The project aims to revitalize the historic building while providing much needed housing the area.
The proposal has faced some legal challenges, but a judge recently upheld the town council’s approval of the project. The development is expected to include modern amenities such as a community room, game room, theater, and fitness center. The project represents a significant step towards preserving Glastonbury’s industrial heritage while adapting to contemporary needs.
